Prof. Dr. Klaus Gerwert

Born in 1956, studied physics in Münster and received his doctorate in biophysical chemistry in Freiburg in 1985. After working at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund and at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, USA, he was appointed C4 professor of biophysics at the Ruhr University Bochum in 1993. He has been a fellow of the Max Planck Society since 2008 and was Director at the Max Planck Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB) in Shanghai, China from 2008 - 2013. Gerwert is strongly committed to the development and application of vibrational spectroscopy in the protein sciences and holds several patents. He is founder and spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Centre 642 "GTP- and ATP-dependent membrane processes" (2004 - 2016). Together with clinical researchers, he founded the European protein research centre PURE (Protein Research Unit Ruhr within Europe) in 2010. He is the founding director of the federal-state-funded Research Building for Molecular Protein Diagnostics (ProDi). Gerwert is a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. His awards include the Karl Arnold Jansen Prize of the NRW Academy of Sciences and the Ruhr Innovation Prize of the Minister President and the Krupp Foundation.
